NIS Recruitment Requirements

An aspirant must meet these requirements below to be considered for the NIS Recruitment Exercise:

  • You must be a Nigerian citizen by birth or descent.
  • Must have a height of not less than 1.7 metres for males and 1.64 metres for females.
  • You must not be less than 18 years and more than 35 years of age.
  • Not suffering from any form of mental or physical disability.
  • Have a fully expanded chest measurement of not less than 0.87 metres.
  • Be free from any form of financial burden.
  • Be certified by a Government Medical Officer to be physically and mentally fit for appointment into the Service.
  • Be of good character and must not have been found guilty of any criminal offence.

Unacceptable Medical Cases

Just like the Nigerian Police. Navy, Airforce and Army recruit abled bodied men into the military, candidates with these medical cases/problems should not apply

  • Problems with sight;
  • Difficulty in hearing;
  • Flat foot
  • Previous major operation;
  • Pregnant women.
  • Fracture, stammering or any other natural disability;

Functions of The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) was carved out of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 1958. At that time, it was called the Immigration Department and carried out its duties under the headship of a Comptroller General (highest rank in the Nigerian Immigration Service).

The service also has various departments under the control of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs as well as the Immigration Ordinance of 1958, which guides its operation. Below are the roles/ functions of the NIS:

  1. Managing and overseeing all immigration activities.
  2. Control and border patrol management.
  3. Issuance of all Nigerian travel documents to Nigerians that have to travel out of the country.
  4. Examination of travel documents and monetary instruments.
  5. Effective control of the Sea Ports and the Passport offices.
